Any room in the squad for the founder of Arsenal America? FYI, I should have THE BANNER here by then.

  2. David Kilpatrick Says:

You banged in your share of goals on DB10 Day, I recall. Will be great to see you and the banner there!

  3. DaveP Says:

Looking forward to it. Not sure when I get in Saturday, but look forward to meeting alot of the Arsenal America folks as well as seeing a few I may have met on past trips.

  4. northlondon11 Says:

Looking forward to it. Can’t really run much because of injury (like Rosicky!) so I’ll just either hang back and pass the ball side to side (like Song!) or cherry pick up top and wait for the ball to come to me (like Adebayor!).

  5. Mark Barbeau Says:

    Wish I could be there!

    off-topic:
The past Bundesliga season was certainly entertaining and Honigstein’s hilarious entry is fun to read too.

One of my fav comment is regarding good old Lehmann:

The Toni Schumacher Award for taking out opponents: Jens Lehmann. When Hoffenheim midfielder Sejad Salihovic lost his right shoe after a foul just outside the box, the Stuttgart goalkeeper dashed out to pick up the boot and threw it over his shoulder. It landed on top of the goal-net, from where Salihovic had to retrieve it. “I’ve always respected Lehmann but that was unsporting conduct and should have been a yellow card,” said Ralf Rangnick.

When he was at Arsenal, Lehmann made me nervous at times as I was not sure when he would explode but there is certainly no one like him. The only Arsenal player who could easily shove a Man Utd player into the boards at Old Trafford without breaking a sweat!

Hey y’all :D … been a long time since I visited this site, glad to see you are still functioning :D , and glad to see Stag is back… last time I was here he was pissed off and wasn’t commenting at all hahah

  8. Sheed_36 Says:

btw, I’m coming to the States on June 13th… too bad I’m going to Washington, not NY…

  9. Rick Says:

Guys, unfortunately I want be able to make it tomorrow. My son’s baseball team made it all the way to the championship game and he’s going to be pitching. Can’t miss that. Have a great time, I’m sure you’ll all have fun.

  10. David Kilpatrick Says:

It was a blast! Will hurt in the morning, surely…

  11. David Kilpatrick Says:

We had three squads of five: NY, Baltimore & Zimbabwe (who added a sixth sub). Jeff L was an adopted NYer and the Zim crew were really an “All Points Other” collection (Philly, Ohio, Orlando). It was evenly matched with the team scored upon going off and it rotated rather smoothly, teams rarely scoring two or three times in a row. I think nearly everyone scored or assisted. No one got (really) hurt. By the time it hit 4:30 and we were kicked off the pitch, we were all thirsty.

So we strolled down to the Chelsea Brewery for pints and a bite before hitting Nevada Smiths. The Anfield 89 dvd didn’t play but we watched the 7-0 thrashing of Boro during the Highbury Final Salute and a Highbury tour video by Tyler Pittman was shown on several screens while the others showed NY getting beat by Toronto (MLS).

We raised £200.00 for the Teenage Cancer Trust!

  12. stag133 Says:

Nice job raising funds for TCT.
    Seriously.

But how about if someone actually had the decency to post a new thread, or post a thread explaining that Arsenal America is changing… since we have folks that have been on the site… die hards…. for YEARS.

  13. stag133 Says:

So Eboue is unhappy at the Arsenal… unsettled at not being first choice.
Well… please… if we can get any kind of decent offer for him, lets sell him.
We do not need his theatrics, dives, and idiotic red cards any longer. His negatives often outweigh his positives. He has skills, but his temperment sucks. If we can get 5 Million, it just means more to spend.
The PROBLEM is, as always… I don’t want to see him sold, if we are just going to pocket the money and not improve the team with the money we receive.

  14. Sachin Says:

as soon as I read that story about him being unhappy, I could imagine Kiwi starting his car up :) He did volunteer to drive Eboue to the airport.

  15. Sachin Says:

saw this posted on the big soccer board regarding Arsenal’s first 6 fixtures:

West Ham United v Arsenal – Aug 15th
    Arsenal v Burnley – Aug 22nd
    Arsenal v Chelsea – Aug 29th
    Bolton Wanderers v Arsenal – Sept 12th
    Liverpool v Arsenal – Sept 19th
    Arsenal v Manchester City – Sept 26th

Already time to think of the new season? If the above are true, then Arsenal would get a good test a few games into the season. At home to Chelsea, away to Bolton and Anfield. Also, the Champs league qualifiers will be slotted some time in august as well.

so the sooner those transfers get done the better…errr, what transfers I guess? :)

  16. vibe4arsenal Says:

SAF imposing an age-limit on new signings? Hmmmm…

  18. stag133 Says:

When you are spending 50 Million or more on a player… I would imagine you would want him to be a YOUNG star, with his best years to come… not at his prime, but en route to his prime.
So 26 should be the limit when spending that much. Makes sense to me.

  19. Sachin Says:

yeah that Sky sports leak did look a bit suspicious…

Interestingly three straight games against Man Utd, Chelse and Liverpool are in the Jan 30 – Feb 9 time frame as opposed to near the end of the season, with the Chelsea and Liverpool game separated by just 3 days.. Time will tell if that is better than having them in April …This year I believe the African Cup of nations starts 10 days earlier than the last edition and should wrap up by the end of January. That will make a difference if Ade stays and Togo qualifies for the tournament in Angola & also if Song ends up playing a crucial role next season and Cameroon ends up qualifying as well..and can’t forget about Ivory Coast with Kolo and Eboue (provided he stays)…

So the next season is slightly under 2 months away and Cesc is still involved with international fixtures. Thankfully he was rested on wed but still…his break might be under 2 weeks..

  20. ctpa Says:

We’ve have an age limit for a few years now, its called puberty.

My question is will Ferguson be criticized for buying players, who will invariably be in the 18-22yo range, like we are?

  21. ctpa Says:

The USA- Italy game brings up a question in my mind. We are over 20 yrs into seeing the fruit of of the soccer grass roots movement in the US. Where’s the fruit? Landon Donovan? Are you sh*tting me?

Italy brought on Clifton, NJ native Rossi and Toni (over the hill but a threat in the air) in the second half. Bob (fired by NY Red Bulls when they were the NY Metrostars) Bradley brings on Charley (f**king) Davis and DeMarcus (I’m so slow I look fast in the SPL) Beasley. The USA will not get a point in this competition. Egypt suddenly looks like a player in group B. The USA will do squat in the WC.

Jermaine Jones trying to do a Thomas Dooley for the US but Bradley’s son is actually one of the bright spots at DM.

Villarreal’s new coach has to do better with Jozy Altidore whose loan move to Xerez was a disaster. I’d love to see him at Arsenal where we could really build up his game.

Eboue to get a 4 yr extension. Yawn.

Will watch alleged Arsenal target Melo w/ Gilberto vs the USA tomorrow.

Spain-Iran reminded me a typical Arsenal game. Everyone in the box and Arsenal pecking away at the periphery. Spain without Fabregas and Riera looked stagnant today.

  22. vibe4arsenal Says:

The latter is what I was wondering about. Or what comment will come out of the side of AW’s mouth regarding this.

  23. stag133 Says:

I heard he was injured in practice / training… because of a hard tackle from
Alonso… and they had words… Cesc was pissed off.

Wouldn’t that be the capper, if he got injured during the Summer.
We’d still stand pat… and go with the Song – Denilson pairing!!!

  24. stag133 Says:

    Who said he’s buying 18-22?
    UNDER 26… means 25 or 24 are okay…!

  25. stag133 Says:

cpta… The US led 1-0 at the half, being down a man!
The fatigue of playing a man down… caught up to them in the 2nd half.
They have no game changer… no star player… but they play decent football as a team unit…

Actually, they were the only one’s in the WC that beat Italy last time… right?

The majority of the best athletes in the US… are always going to play Baseball, Football or Basketball… its where the money is.

  26. joshuad Says:

Ferguson’s policy is the same as Wenger’s with signing old players for big money. It’s something he tries to avoid because you can’t get that money back when it’s time to move that player on.

Another major factor is that this big money player may not have the desired impact that you’d hoped for. Berbatov is an example along with Shevchenko and even Hleb with his move to Barcelona. You simply never can tell how they’ll work out so it’s very risky to place big money on a player. A younger guy with big potential would be cheaper and not under so much pressure to immediately produce super quality and justify a huge transfer fee. This allows that player to focus on his game and integrating into the team. I know many are frustrated but I agree with Wenger’s transfer policy. We just need to stop losing important players every year.

  27. joshuad Says:

Actually stag133, we only managed a draw with Italy in the last World Cup. Eddie Pope was so garbage, raising his hand while Luca Toni was scoring goals. Gotta make up your mind, Eddie; do you want to be a defender or an assistant referee?

I wrote an essay on soccer in the US a few years ago and it actually got passed around. In that essay I wrote that one of the major problems with player development in the US was if you want to play at a descent level as a youth player in the states, you’ve got to have money. There will never be a rags to riches story for a footballer in the US unless you’re lucky enough to have a sponsor. In order for these players to develop they’ve got to play at the highest level possible, which is often not highschool, but the youth premier leagues or through ODP.

Problem is these premier leagues cost a lot of money. By the time you’ve paid for league fees, coaches, travel, food, lodging, uniforms, training equipment, referees, soccer shoes for various surfaces, etc., it can get very expensive. Then you have to have a parent who is willing to give up ALL of their free time to travel with their kids. Everywhere that I’ve lived throughout the country, I’ve seen players with tremendous talent and desire who simply never realize their potential because they happen to come from poor families where their folks can’t afford for them to play.

In Europe, it’s the opposite. The only thing required is talent and somebody will find you. Hell, the Brits even found a yank named Jay Demerit playing in their parks. You’ve got people who’ve come from the slum like Edgar Davids, Ronaldo, van Persie, Roberto Carlos, etc. that have come from nothing to become stars. I’m willing to bet money that less than ten percent of the US National team pool comes from a really poor family. The problem isn’t all of our best athletes only play football and basketball. The problem is the US will only recruit and develop the best players that can afford to play whereas the rest of the world recruit and develop ALL of their best players and more comprehensively.

  28. CaribKid Says:

    How very true Joshuad,

I coached U-10 thru 14 in Florida for many years and 99.5% of my players came from the privileged class. I tried to get sponsorship for some less privileged Somali’s with great talent but just never had any takers and I couldn’t do it all by myself.

I ended up with intelligent, technically good, well schooled players who lacked the flair to make a difference at the international level.

  29. stag133 Says:

and that IS the US National team… intelligent, technically good, well schooled.
No flair… no star player… that can change the game. None.

  30. Seattlegooner Says:

Until the top notch athletes in the U.S. start playing soccer at a high level, that is always going to be the case. Most of the best athletes here go play football or basketball and until that changes there won’t be many flair players. Imagine if athletes like Kobe Bryant or Larry Fitzgerald played soccer instead oftheir respective sports.

  31. stag133 Says:

    Larry Fitzgerald playing soccer?!
    LOL
If he had nurtured the skills from a young age… he’d be amazing!

  32. stag133 Says:

US brushed aside pretty easily be Brazil. Brazil were nothing special, but they just put away the opportunities that they were presented. A set piece headed in… the US screwed up a corner, and Brazil ran the other way and deposited in the net… 3-0.
We are what we are… and the US has to play a pretty perfect game to compete against the better teams.

Egypt can PLAY! They beat Italy 1-0. That is a GOOD team.

and the rumor is that Vermaelen is to have a physical in London tomorrow (Friday)… so we might actually sign someone early. Haven’t seen a lot of him, just highlight video, but I LIKE it. Taking action, and in an area we need to sort out… let’s hope it happens, and we move on to the next signing ASAP!

  33. ctpa Says:

    Flair 3-0 USA today.
    Egypt 1-0 Old Men.

The only flair player the USA has is Ghanain Freddy Adu and he failed a trial at Man U and has been floundering on loan at Monaco.

Lippi confessed that Italy do not have it in their cultural dna to play beautiful football like Spain. That is why Serie A will be decline with Kaka leaving and Ibrahimovic is flirting. Inter, the Serie A champion only had 1 player on the Italian team. Stalwart Brazil, Arsenal and Spain will now uphold the beautiful game going forward for now.

  34. northlondon11 Says:

off topic: who is planning on catching some matches this season? charles krauthammer is one weird looking dude.

  35. USGunner Says:

I like everything I’m reading and hearing about the Vermaelen signing. 23-year-old Ajax captain with significant international and CL experience. Should help out the defence right away. Gunner fans should be very happy. Plus, I’m confident we’ll see another one or two signing before long.

Watched the Brazil vs. USA game last night. Couple things:
    1. Watching Gilberto made me wish he were still with Arsenal. We definitely could’ve used him last season.
    2. Melo scored a very nice goal. Is this guy really a possible Arsenal transfer target, or is that just rumor?
    3. The US team looked very inadequate. At this rate Bradley is not long for the job.

  36. USGunner Says:

I coach at a junior college in Phoenix and I can tell you that the US has a very large pool of creative, skillful soccer players to choose from – latinos. However, most of these players don’t get seen through the traditional conduits like club soccer, college soccer, and olympic development. Consequently, many never get the opportunity to train and compete at a higher level. The good news is that local clubs and associations are working to integrated these players more and more. It’s just going to take some time.

Additionally, as soccer becomes more mainstream in this country more and more kids choose it over the other sports. I can tell you that the ability and opportunity that kids playing today have is light years better than what I had 10 or 15 years ago. It may another ten years before we are truely competitive with the best teams, but we are getting there.

  37. ctpa Says:

Very nice win for England U21 (over Spain) w/ Walcott being a ‘super-sub’ and setting up the 2nd goal. Now for Germany on Mon.

The truth is out and Vermaelen is 6 ft. Whew and I thought he was going to be a 5’11″ ‘midget’. When is the last time Arsenal got a summer transfer in this early. Gazidis is in effect.

  38. muffintop Says:

Melo is certainly an intriguing player. He tackles very hard and has secured a starting position recently on the Brazilian national squad. I would love to see this guy in an Arsenal uniform next season as the solution to our DM problems. However, I read that to acquire him we’d need to offer ~14m which I’m not sure we can afford, especially after just spending 10m on Vermaelen. Melo looks to be a better option than Veloso or Inler so we should offer them Senderos as part of the deal to knock off some of the price.

And yes, the US team looked terrible. I’m really hoping Altidore hits his stride for the World Cup next year because we need a young player to step up and show the world and the United States that our country truely does has a future as a footballing nation. I don’t care if people say we already have 4 major sports. Football is catching on in the U.S. and I mean EPL, La Liga, and Serie A…..not MLS. Instead of the youth playing baseball almost all of them are playing football now. Its only a matter of time.

  39. USGunner Says:

I gotta believe that we’ve got the resources to make it happen. I wouldn’t even be opposed to selling certain “assets” if we had to . . . cough . . . Adebayor . . . cough . . . Eboue. I think overall the team would be stronger. Let’s hope Gazidis is really this good.
