Greetings Gooners!  I am excited to update you on the Arsenal America supporters Haiti Relief efforts!  First and foremost, a HUGE thank you to each of you that donated money to support the relief efforts going on in Haiti.  The Charm City Gooners and the NYC Arsenal Supporters have had great success with raising money for the victims of the Haiti earthquake, raising $150 and $200 respectively.  Remember that the relief effort for Haiti is ongoing, and needs your support.  Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions about our donation efforts, or if you would like to donate.  You can e-mail me at josh@arsenalamerica.com.

Thomas Vermaelen

For those of you that watched in horror, as Thomas Vermaelen limped off the pitch yesterday, all is not lost.  The official x-ray’s and scans came back today that he suffered a bad knock.  Some folks have looked at the match as a loss of two points, which it was . . . technically.  But I for one think that Villa played well, forced us to make some saves, and caused us problems in a few areas.  We were also quite unlucky to find the woodwork standing in our way of a goal.  In the end, the lads must re-group, and re-focus as Manchester United await us on Sunday.

Until then, keep the faith!

Villa v Arsenal Ramsey

So today begins a run of games that could well define our season.  Our Gunners head off to Villa Park in the hopes of bringing home 3 points, and a position at the top of the league.  This has been a season of highs, and unfortunately a few lows.  We are now officially out of two major competitions in the FA Cup and the Carling Cup.  Many would not consider either trophies to be “major” but at the end of the day we only have four cups to play for (EPL Title, Champions League, FA Cup, and Carling Cup).  So, we have two trophies that we are in contention for at this point in the season.  I for one think that Arsene weighed out the injuries, games ahead in the league, importance of the title and Champions League, and said to himself, “is le FA Cup worth it?”  I guess it wasn’t, as we were ousted on Sunday by Stoke City.

So, where does the team go from here?  Our next run of games is a gauntlet of physicality, experience, size, and pressure:

Aston Villa (A)
Manchester United (H)
Chelsea (A)
Liverpool (H)
FC Porto (A)

Each of the teams that we face starting today will fancy 3 points from The Arsenal, and will look to do so by any means necessary (shank, shiv, you name it).  Teams know that Arsenal can beat any team on their day, and it is paramount to stop the free flowing football if you want to have a chance.  The challenge is that the other teams also know what get’s Arsenal off task.  Physical teams give us a tough time.  Teams with size also pose problems, so the addition of Nicklas Bendtner on the bench is a welcomed sight going into today’s match.  Samir Nasri will also be joining the Dane on the bench today.  Sagna, despite not being fully fit due to a shoulder injury, will make the start at right back.  Clichy will fill in on the left, and Vermaelen and Gallas will fill in the middle.  There is the outside chance that Sol might make an appearance, but I doubt it.

Theo will most likely make the start today, as his pace can cause many problems for the Villa defense.  Cesc will take hold of the middle of the pitch, with the possiblity of Aaron Ramsey on the left.  Arshavin, Eduardo, and Vela are possibilities up front.  Any way you slice it, this is going to be a tough match.

Cassette Player
If we win this match we will go 15 points clear of Villa.  They know what is on the line, and will play to win.  I for one think that this is our time to shine.  We have a host of players that can deliver on any given day.  Hopefully all of the motivational tapes that I have been sending Arshavin and Cesc will pay off.  I know what you are thinking . . . “who has a tape deck anymore?”  That’s why I have to send everything to Arshavin.  He has his tape deck from the old CCCP days.  As a proponent of motivational tapes, I had to use the medium that resonated with the team best.  The lads listen to Arshavin, so I knew that a tape would be the only way to reach him.  He does not do digital media . . . yet.

So, if you are at work, eating lunch, or have made time for the match, make sure to support Arshavin, Cesc, and the rest of the lads today.  Some of you have asked if this game will be played live, and it is if you have the expanded channels offered by DirecTV.  They are the only ones that I know of that are showing this match live.  If not, you can watch it on replay on Setanta . . . which, ironically enough, like the cassette tape player is about to go the way of the Dodo.

Cheers to tape cassettes and an Arshavin hat trick.

COME ON YOU GUNNERS!

A Word From Arsene

Stoke v Arsenal FA Cup 01-24-10

Arsene was kind enough to write me a letter explaining Sunday’s match.  I felt so much better after reading this . . . I am not sure if you are noting my sarcasm, but I am laying it down pretty thick.

Dear Arsenal America Supporters,

Sunday’s FA Cup tie was more physical than technical and physically Stoke were stronger better than us.

We had a fantastic careless attitude and at 1-1 we looked like we were on top in the last 20 minutes so it was important not to make a mistake. But we got caught with our pants down, picking daisies, looking at the stars, and wondering what was on the BBC that night . . . “oh, am I supposed to be focused while playing” . . . “oops” . . . on the counter-attack for their second goal and that was an important moment in the game.

I knew that it would be tight I had no interest in this cup . . . I mean let’s be honest, the only thing you win is a case of beer, and the opportunity to play in the first match of the season, and win another meaningless trophy . . . but I had hoped that after bringing on Ramsey, Eduardo and Arshavin that we would win the game. But Stoke were sharp, they were physical beating us up and they were always dangerous in the air with that Rory Decrap fellow. The pitch was very difficult because it was not very good and it took us too much time to bring the ball down and play.  I have said this before, we will only play on the most perfect of pitches, because that is the only way that we will win . . . we . . . no?

I do not regret my team selection because I did not have much choice care. Bacary Sagna, Thomas Vermaelen and Gael Clichy could not play and I think Sol Campbell had a good game overall.  I didn’t mention Silvestre because I am just hoping he goes away.

If you look at our schedule you cannot always play with the same XI, that is for sure. If I rotate and we don’t win it is my fault so I can only stand up and say that is the team I picked. We have ten injuries and we are going into a period where we cannot rotate a lot in the big games.

Sol made his second ‘debut’ for Arsenal and he did very well. Maybe in the last 20 minutes he was a bit fatigued completely out of breath, grasping his chest, praying that the game would end . . . but he was surprisingly fit for a guy who has not played for such a long time. He is motivated, he works very hard in training and you could see that on Sunday.

Sagna, Vermaelen and Clichy will all be back for Aston Villa on Wednesday and they could have missed that game if they had played at Stoke. Now it is vital for us to focus on Villa because we are in an interesting position and it is a very important game.

Thanks for your unquestioning, unwavering, and blind support.

It was by no means our greatest performance, and our lack of experience and physicality showed.  Our lineup was well . . . it was what it was:

Fabianski
Coquelin  Campbell  Silvestre  Traore
Eastmond  Denilson  Fabregas
Emmanuel-Thomas  Walcott  Vela

Subs:

Arshavin
Ramsey
Eduardo

With Villa ahead of us on Wednesday, Arsene had to weigh all of the options.  Goodplaya did a lovely write up that gives a breakdown of each of the players.  So, we are down to two possible trophies, and they aren’t too shabby.  The EPL title is well within reach and we have Porto next in the Champions League.  Don’t marinate on Sunday too long.  The only team of the big four that is left in the competition is Chelsea, and they have had a cake run in to the last few games.  Here is the 5th Round draw of the FA Cup:

Wolves/Crystal Palace v Aston Villa
Manche$ter City v Stoke
Derby v Birmingham
Bolton v Spurs/Leeds
Chel$ea v Cardiff
Fulham v Notts County/Wigan
Reading v West Brom
Southampton v Portsmouth

Until Wednesday, Keep the Faith.
