May 08

While the domestic season is over, there is stil the matter of the Champions League final. I think this is certainly the right time to laugh at Spurs (ha ha) or discuss the match in Paris, but trying to review the season, players, manager, etc., well it’s too much, too soon right now.

After May 17 we’ll have plenty to talk about, enough to take us to the first Champions League qualifier, or the Bergkamp testimonial, whichever comes first.

Couple of final thoughts…

Early in the match one of the commentators noted that “Arsenal’s entire business model is built around Champions League football.” Really? I haven’t heard Arsenal say that. Arsenal’s management doesn’t strike me as the type to make that sort of mistake.

It also presupposes that without Champs League football next year Ashburton Grove will be an empty bowl. Nonsense. If there is one season where Arsenal could play no European football and be ok, it will be this first season when thousands upon thousands will simply...

Ed. Note - Stag has been fighting the good fight for his views in the comments sections, now he’s ready to launch an offensive. I’ll be back with my rebuttal a little later. Here’s Stag:

Total Madness

No, I am not talking about the Album “the Very Best of Madness”. They are fantastic band, thank you.

You know I am speaking about the recent team selections of Arsene Wenger. TOTAL MADNESS. Beyond explanation is more like it. I haven’t heard a good argument yet (in my opinion) for what he has done over the last 2 matches. It borders insanity.

I’ll...

Why didn’t you guys tell me you’ve been watching all of the training going on? And the microphones you planted in Wenger’s office to listen in when he talks to the medical staff, genius. I’m also impressed by your CVs, I didn’t realise so many of you had coached professional football at the highest level for more than 15 years.

What’s that? You’re actually talking out of your arse? Oh.

I have no problem with people expressing their opinions, but some things are more debatable than others.

Sol Campbell - good guy or quitter? That’s...

…you better play a Goddamn blinder tonight. I was never a big Sol fan, but when he walked out on the club a couple of months back, that pretty much sealed the deal for me.

Injury-prone, selfish and with diminishing skills, he climbed out of the foxhole and ran while his teammates were left to face the music.

Sol is now back in the lineup more from necessity than choice and anything less than a spectacular effort is not going to sit well with me. Before all of you give me the ’support our players’ line, let me ask you this: At any point has Sol shown one bit of...

Beating Man United would have been big. Spurs, seeing that match as their chance to get some space on the Gunners, would have been crushed if Arsenal had won.

As it is there is now almost no room for error anymore. He is the run-in for both teams:

Spurs:
At Everton
Man United
At Arsenal
Bolton
At West Ham

Realistically, that’s about 8 points (including a draw v. Arsenal) for them.

Arsenal:
At Pompey
West Brom
At Man City
Spurs
At Sunderland
Wigan Athletic

Let’s say 13 points (with...

Plenty of places to read match details, and you probably watched it anyway. So, here’s a couple of other things to think about:

You can’t underestimate what an effective Hleb and Ljungberg have meant to this team. A new, dangerous attacking dimension is added by these two, along with Cesc, that has really made a difference. Reyes deserves credit there too.

Regarding the Boss, many people have complained that he was too easy on many of the players earlier this year. I think it may just be that he doesn’t air that sort of thing in public. But he’s had no...

Jose Antonio Reyes.

He came very close to scoring a goal against Real Madrid and hit the bar at Highbury against Juve, but didn’t find the back of the net.

In the meantime, Hleb, Eboue, Cesc, Senderos and even Flamini have come in for high praise. I’m not saying JAR hasn’t contributed, he definitely has, but a goal would really cement his efforts.

Juve is going to have to push forward and I have no doubt that Reyes’ pace will provide him an opportunity to score, perhaps even an early goal that would effectively end the tie.

JAR has worked hard,...

Building on Rick’s theme of “All to Play For”…

It is sometimes a match (or matches) like the two we have this week, that can change or create a team’s destiny … at least for the near future.

Take for example…
-Michael Jordan hitting that game winning shot against Cleveland, Champion made… and MJ’s legend grows and so do all the trophies from the titles the Bulls go on to win…

-The “TUCK” call in the AFC Championship game between the PATRIOTS and Raiders…. leads to the amazing kick by Adam...

Things are looking pretty these days, aren’t they? Kicking ass in Europe, taking names in England. Yeah, up the Arse! Well, it would serve us all to remember that this season, now showing so much promise, can be torn asunder quickly. Juve are certainly capable of scoring two goals. Arsenal need to put on the pressure and get a precious away goal. But even a win against Juve doesn’t mean Arsenal are out of the woods. Perhaps the only team playing better than the Gunners right now is Man U, who they face on the weekend. A result there is a must.

Two massive matches, bad results...
