What a Week!

Hi all Arse Am Gunner Fans, what a week it has been! I have enjoyed my first trip to Highbury so much and was so fortunate to enjoy 2 top quality matches in which our team has performed extremely well!
The mood for the Real Madrid match was electric as everyone was excited and hopeful of our victory. The Gunners had thrilled us on the away game and after the loss at Blackburn we all were wondering which Arsenal team would show up. Well we soon saw the determination and commitment of all the players. One thing that was so different being at the match was that you could see how each of our players were picking up their man and so RM often had nowhere to go as all were covered and options were rare. It was just awesome to hear the singing and joining in, what atmosphere!

Arsenal America Road Trip ? Hazy Images come into Focus

Green. Bright Green. That was the first image that struck me the most as I climbed the stairs for Block 7 of the North Bank Lower Stand. It was 7:05 pm (on Wed Nov 2) and the lights were shining down brightly onto the pitch. The lights and freshly painted white lines made the green pitch stand out even more. Of all the years of watching Highbury on tv, I had never seen the pitch as richly green as I saw it that night. I searched for my seat in Row U and after I finally sat down, it started to sink in. I am here, finally I am here! All the images that I had seen on tv, magazines and internet over the years were finally being replaced by new ones. I could clearly see the Clock that Herbert Chapman got put up at Highbury (hence the name Clock end), the West Stand, the Sparta players warming up on the field in front of me, the East Stand and ofcourse, the rest of the North Stand which was slowly starting to fill up. The two prominent Jumbo screens were busy showing football commercials, interviews with Wenger and other players (Henry, Lauren). And then around 7:15 pm, the Arsenal players took to the pitch for their warm-up. The dream was finally materializing. Yes, Henry was there. It wouldn?t have been the same without him. So was Bergkamp, Pires, Van Persie, Toure, Reyes and all the rest. They ran across the pitch and continued their warm-up routines. Toure was the first player who came closest to the North end followed by Reyes and Van Persie.
Looking for a place to stay…

I’m planning on visiting some friends in Europe in February, and I’m planning on taking a trip to THOF before Emirates Stadium opens up. Does anyone know of a very cheap/reasonable hostel/place to stay in and around Highbury? I’m a University student, so the more money I could save, the better. The plan would be to stay 2-3 nights and hopefully be there on a game day. Any help would be appreciated.

Ed. Note – These are really my favorite kind of Arsenal America stories. Personal remembrances of special memories and new friends…
In April 2004, amidst planning a two-week vacation in Europe, I fired off an e-mail to a complete stranger asking for help with the most important part of my trip. That stranger, David Przybylinski, quickly responded and explained that he might be able to help me out. He introduced me to another complete stranger, a gentleman by the name of Rick Breese, and between the two of them I finally made it to Highbury ? twice.

Ed. Note – A new member recalls a memorable match…
I am new to Arsenal America, but with the recent departures of some players it reminded me of my first trip to Highbury that I would like to share with you. I had only recently started following the Gunners after they won the double in 1998, and so the following season a friend and I decided to go to London for a long weekend and see if we could catch a match. As it was, Arsenal was at home in a 5th round FA Cup tie with Sheffield United, little did I know what was in store for us.

What a year to visit highbury! If any of you are lucky enough to see a game, please remember you are blessed to see a great team. Show them how proud you are yell your head off. Lose you voice – enjoy. Through the thick & thin with Dignity.
Gooners love their team & the sport. I have been a Gooner all my life it runs in my Blood @ 70 I still get the same thrill or sadness. As as kid I remember getting a wack on the ear for using a 4 letter word because a lady was about 10 yds away.

Ed. Note – Sure, talking about the Arsenal is a big part of Arsenal America, but I think we all get a kick out of here those first-hand experiences that members have, especially if we haven’t yet been ourselves…
I want to start off my story by thanking Rick Liebling, Rick Breese & Jill Smith if it was for them the trip would never have been as wonderful as it was.
Arsenal v Bolton

I visited England for spring break a couple weeks ago. The highlight of my trip was visiting Highbury. I took the stadium tour and I attended the game against Bolton Wanderers. I managed to buy a ticket at face value outside the stadium from someone whose son was ill, and I sat in the East Stand Upper Tier, while my mother, who was traveling with me, ended up in the North Bank. I think she caught a bit of Gooner fever.

Hello, fellow gooners!
I and my husband (plus our two little ones) visited Highbury last year in April. We saw the FA semi finals at Old Trafford and a home game against ManU. We figured we definitely should go before Bergkamp retires and before the new stadium.
Arsenal – dirty leeds tickets
March 13, 2004 | 7 Comments
I will be heading to Highbury for my first time in mid April. I am looking to buy tickets to the Arsenal – dirty leeds match on the 17th. I do not mind paying a bit through one of the online ticket agencies but do not wish to get ripped off. The going rate for East/West end seats seems to be around 300USD. Does anyone know of a reputable site for the exchange? Also, do they ship to USA or do I have to pick em up in the UK?
