My wife has been itching to go abroad and has used my love of Arsenal as leverage. The problem is I ambitiously–but ignorantly, in hindsight–booked airline tickets around the ManU fixture.

Everything about my first trip to Highbury last week had an air of cosmic coincidence that seems too good not to share. It all started right before the New Year. After seeing a few ads for cheap airfare from New York to London, I took a look at the fixture list, trying to find the perfect day to set out on my trip to Mecca. Bolton Wanderers on March 20th — that would be the day I’d walk through the turnstiles at Highbury to see the Gunners live and in person for the very first time. I was set on it and booked my flight. Then I told my boss.

Ed. - Raise a pint to this man! First year of Association football after WWII and he starts following the Gunners. They finish 13th that season. Fifty-eight years later and here he is! God bless you Sir…
My Dad took me to my first league match AUG 1946 it was the begining of a lfetime of supporting the Gunners. In those days it was not unusual to have a 60,000 gate. I never sat in the stands always stood at the clock end. We would get to the game at lease 2hrs early to get in. There were no lights to play under so some games started 12 noon. The police would use horses mounted to...

My first time
The first time I visited Highbury was last spring. I was goin to school in Oxford and had only been around the outside of the stadium once. I purchased tickets for the match against Everton on the 23rd of March.

My first time was less than 2 weeks ago, Jan. 10 vs. Middlesborough. I have been an Arsenal fan for almost 20 years now, but following them from the States, especially before the internet, wasn’t easy. I always told myself I would make the pilgrammage before the team moves, but never done anything about that. This year I decided it was time to do something, over my winter holiday I planned a trip, coinciding with the Jan. 10th game.
My first Highbury experience was a March 1997 match against Nottingham Forest. I was able to take advantage of an airfare price war and I got over to London from Buffalo for $350. I had a place to stay with friends of a friend near the Archway tube station. I’d called the club earlier in the week but there were no tickets available. My English host was more persistent and went to the ticket office and came up with single seat tickets.
The following text has also been posted to the Arsenal boards at Big Soccer, but what the hell.
Thanks to Kelvin for the invitation, I wasn’t able to fit it in this time. I will make a point to meet you next time.
So I finally made it back stateside.
Let’s first start by thanking the man of the match, Jeff Lancaster, for arranging a ticket for me.
So I’m flying out on Sunday from Minneapolis to London, and I have arranged a ticket for the home match v. Aston Villa on Tuesday.
I’ve traveled all over the continent, but this will be my first trip to England as well.
I’m staying at a hotel just a few stops away from Arsenal station on the Piccadilly line.
I will post all the details when I get back!
It was a dark and stormy night.
My girlfriend (now wife) had just flown in from Hong Kong on a 12+ hour flight. I had flown over a few days earlier on business and we were meeting in London, seeing each other for the first time in months. I had but one idea for our first night together in months:
ROADTRIP TO HIGHBURY!
Arsenal was playing Lazio on September 27, 2000 in a driving rain and a match which everyone expected Arsenal to lose. Lazio came in not being the group favorite, but the overall favorite to win the Champions League that season. Arsenal, despite winning...

It was November of 2001.
I met up with an English mate of mine at Finsbury Park; I had to follow my London A to Z to get there, as the authorities had closed both the Finsbury Park and Arsenal tube stops in fear of crowd trouble. So, I had a good 20-minute hike up the Tollington Road, but it was a blessing in disguise as I saw streams of people simply walking out their front doors dressed in red and white.
We went for pints, where we ran into the host of Sportsnet’s Saturday EPL show, and then made it onto the North Stand, where more than a few fans were surprised...
