Sorry all, I was out of town all weekend, and I guess Dan must have been too. Anyway, a great win for the Gunners yesterday as Captain Mohawk headed Arsenal to a 1-0 win over Chelsea. I’m sure you’re all post-match discussion-ed out, but if there’s any more left in you, have at it below.
Abou Diaby and Robin van Persie both started and played extremely well (the former opening the scoring just eight minutes in, the latter setting up Nick Bendtner’s 40th minute winner), while Theo Walcott used the opportunity to show further glimpses into his potential as the Gunners cruised to a meaningless 2-1 win over Steau. The result was rendered moot by virtue of three second half goals by Sevilla over Slavia in Prague to give the Andalucians top spot in the group.
Finishing second means that we will have to play one of the group winners. Eliminating Sevilla and the English...

The swoon continues, this time hitting rock bottom in a 2-1 loss to relegation candidates Boro. If this match hadn’t followed the run of Seville, Villa and Newcastle, I’d write it off as a bad day, but the writing’s been on the wall for a while now. Absolute crap.
Despite Emmanuel Adebayor’s sick-as-hell goal four minutes in, the Gunners can’t make the most of their game in hand, and drop two points in a 1-1 draw against Newcastle at St. James’ Park. In fact, apart from the early goal, Arsenal’s play was more a continuation of the poor display during the second half against Villa than of the form shown up to this point.
Five points clear in a Jekyll/Hyde game, as Arsenal did enough to get past a red-hot Aston Villa side.
Villa struck first from Craig Gardner before Flamini and Adebayor struck for the Gunners to take the 2-1 lead at the half. The second half was all about withstanding intense Villa pressure, which wasn’t helped when Alex Hleb had to go off after a hard foul from behind by John Carew. Yellow, not Red, a bit debatable.
Frayed nerves and chewed nails, but the win puts us five points in front. Great start to a tough league stretch.
We all knew it would happen eventually, and today was that day. Eduardo’s early goal gave Arsenal the lead, Keita and Fabiano answered in the 1st half, and Fredi Kanoute sealed the win with a penalty kick in the 2nd half.
The loss puts Sevilla in the driver’s seat to win the group. Arsenal, of course has already qualified, but needs help to finish top of the group.
Let the predicatable bitching and whining about Senderos and Gilberto begin.
Two quick thoughts from watching on Sopcast:
-the Sevilla crowd was absolutely magnificent, screaming at the top...

They left it VERY late, but Arsenal continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-0 victory over Wigan at the Emirates on Saturday.
Several players were missing from the side due to injuries, or in the case of Cesc Fabregas, suspension. Until the 84th minute, it seemed that missing those players was going to cost the Gunners a victory. However, William Gallas’s ghosting run into the box met Bacary Sagna’s perfect cross, and the captain headed the ball past Michael Pollit to earn the victory. Having forced Wigan to respond, the game opened up for the Gunners, and...

Arsenal stays top of the league with a convincing 3-1 win at Reading.
Mathieu Flamini first broke down the home team with a late first-half goal, then the Gunners took command in the second. Emmanuel Adebayor scored early in the half, had a goal incorrectly disallowed for offside a few minutes later, then Alex Hleb sealed the win with the 3rd in the 78th minute. Nicky Shorey got a consolation goal in the 87th minute for Reading.
Also of note, Cesc picked up a yellow card after Hleb’s goal, meaning he’ll miss the home match against Wigan due to an accumulation...

I missed yesterday’s yawn-fest due to a huge divisional meeting we had at the office. I was complaining at the time, but I suppose I came out ahead, considering there were free drinks at the end of the meeting.
Arsene overhauled the starting eleven, and Slavia were quite determined to give a better account of themselves after the 7-0 drubbing of a fortnight ago. All indications are that a point a piece was a fair result. Having now clinched qualification, the Gunners can concentrate on the Premiership and the upcoming journey to Reading on Monday. Kickoff is 3 PM ET, and...

An injury time goal from captain William Gallas gave Arsenal a 2-2 tie and kept the Gunners at the top of the table. Gallas, who scored an own goal in the first half, saved the draw after a goalmouth scramble in the dying minutes of the match.
ManUre led 1-0 at the half, Cesc equalized early in the 2nd, but Cristiano Ronaldo put the Gunners behind in the 82nd minute, setting up the game’s frantic conclusion.
A point won or two lost?
