The Return of the UCI (pre-Liverpool Edition)

To Steven Gerrard, for this comment about Young Theo’s inclusion in the World Cup squad:

Walcott had no right to be in Germany. None at all. I was gobsmacked to find him on the plane.

Instead of running his mouth, Gerrard should concentrate on what he does best, like getting substituted in the Merseyside derby, begging referees to hand out cards to his opponents, missing sitters in England’s Euro qualifying campaign, and choking in a World Cup quarterfinal shootout.

I’m not a big believer in bulletin board material, but I imagine Young Theo will have read that quote by the time next Sunday rolls around.

Shut up Cygan

July 17, 2005 | 13 Comments

Arsenal defender Pascal Cygan is concerned that Patrick Vieira’s Highbury exit will be followed by that of Thierry Henry.

“I can foresee the possibility of Thierry leaving as a result of Patrick’s departure,” he told The Sun.

“I have heard people say that boss Arsene Wenger wants to sign two international class players.

“But if it means losing Pat for him, what the hell is the point?

“Patrick will leave behind a huge gap and I don’t see who will be able to replace him. The training ground will be a sad place without him.”

Is this really helpful?? What good have you ever done for this club Cygan? You’re a walking disaster.

You’re barely a reserve player now, but you just hang around to pick up your wages every week. Most players in your shoes would be begging to leave; so do something useful and be like them.

THOSE WORLD SOCCER WEEKLY GUYS HITTING OUR TV SCREENS THIS AUGUST

June 11, 2004 | 1 Comment

Ed. Note – This has the potential to be a really fun show. Or the worst 30 minutes in television history. Either way, I’ll certainly be tuning in for the first show…

Those of you who tune into Nick Geiber and Steven Cohen on Monday evenings and Wednesday mornings on the radio to hear their views on football or in Steven’s case why Chelsea are inferior to the unbeatable Arsenal will now be able to see this dynamic duo on Fox Sports World from Friday 4th August on a weekly basis as they will be hosting “Fox Football Friday”. From what they’ve told me it’s going to the yank version of Sky Sports “Soccer AM”. It will have the Fox Female Football Fan Of The Week as well as the lads opinions on the upcoming games in the EPL plus Steven has assured he will be bringing out his Subbuteo set to highlight plays. The show airs live at 9pm EST/6pm PST every Friday with two further re-airings at midnight EST Saturday/9pm PST Friday, then at 9am EST Saturday/6am PST Saturday before the live EPL game. For further details listen the lads on World Soccer Weekly on Monday nights at 11pm EST/8pm PST and on Big Soccer Wednesday at 1pm EST/10am PST. Also you can find info about this on http://www.worldsoccerweekly.com

Arsenal’s Unbeaten Stars Actually Aliens from Outer Space

Ed.Note – I’m not totally in agreement with ScottyUS’s assessment of this article. I think there is some credence to the notion that the Premiership below the top four or five is fairly weak. Still, take nothing away from Arsenal’s accomplishment, there have been weak teams in the past and strong ones who won the League, but didn’t go undefeated…

I understand that belittling criticism of great feats done by great teams goes with the territory, so it comes as no surprise when I read articles attributing our historical EPL achievement to taking advantage of weak 2003-2004 league competition.

Suffering from overactive Blatters, and quitting Master Bates

Ed. Note – Any editorial rant that invokes the name of Thor’s Hammer is ok by me. Here’s Geoff Wessel with a good old fashioned venting of his spleen…

Well well well, lookie who’s back in England, trying to further destroy anything remotely exciting about club football.

Oh yes, once again Swingin’ Sepp Blatter, FIFA President Extraordinaire, is swingin’ the mighty Sepp Hammer like it was Mjolnir itself. As if meddling in the FA’s business during the Rio Ferdinand affair wasn’t enough, Blatter is now pushing, again, for the English Premier League to drop from 20 to 16 teams, AS WELL AS limiting the number of domestic ties played per season. Thus also cutting into the FA and League (Carling, whatever) Cups, in case you were keeping score.

UCI
1. Paul Durkin ? Nice job on the Newcastle ? Man United match
2. Danny Mills ? Yeah, get Titi angry, that?s a good idea
3. Man United fans at BigSoccer ? If you spent as much time on your boards as you do on ours, maybe your boards wouldn?t suck
4. Man United PLC ? Stop missing drug tests; tapping up Fulham players and illegally procuring MLS goalkeepers. Allegedly of course.
5. Barcelona ? I?m a huge fan of Dutch football and Barca, but getting Davids is not the answer.

The Return of the UCI

Unmitigated Crap Index

Because you, the home viewer, demanded it, we bring you the return of the often imitated but never duplicated UCI. Here?s a salute to those who have wet the proverbial bed:

1. Inter Milan ? Riding high after the first three Champs League games, they failed to advance.
2. ESPN ? Don?t be afraid to show more Champions League games.
3. All the coaches who voted Zidane World Player of the Year ? Yeah, he?s good, but did he really have a better year than Thierry Henry?
4. All these smug Chelsea fans ? All of a sudden their team is in the hunt (though they haven?t really won anything yet, have they?) and they come out of the woodwork, talking like their Real Madrid or something. Really starting to dislike these people.
5. Arsenal FC ? I know, I know, but come on, let us bring our banners into Highbury!

BIG SOCCER RADIO

November 12, 2003 | 1 Comment

…is a polite description of what I’m listening to at the moment. What I’m hearing is a non-stop, breathless, word marathon by two total morons. The fact that they support Chelsea, a club rich in the tradition of winning nothing, is neither here nor there. They know nothing about football. The only reason I tuned in was to hear Frank McClintock, but unfortunately he had to cancel because his wife is ill.

These two Chelsea whiners are complete wankers, and I’m done listening to them.

The UCI Award! Week 3!

August 29, 2003 | Leave a Comment

I would just like to open this by saying NO, I did NOT put Wolverhampton as a whole for this week, since really they played a pretty good game, and held ManUre to just 1 goal. But there are individuals, oh, yes there are…

The Week 3 Edition of the Geoffrey D. Wessel UCI Award!

THE RUNNERS UP:

* Neil Warnock (Sheffield United): He says he’ll self-impose a higher sentence on himself for being a right arse in 2 high-profile games for the Blades. HE LIKES THE PAIN, YES HE DOES.

* Henri Camara (Wolverhampton): No broadsides of any barns in the Black Country are at risk with him around, ever.
